About Us

About Us:

Hello and welcome to Maple Hill Academy. We're a husband and wife power duo that have struggled to understand why our children have been struggling in public schools. Like most people we went through the struggles that arose during the Covid pandemic (Love it or hate it, it's real). We struggled with out oldest child in keeping her attention during the homeschool days, and never thought we would find ourselves actually choosing to go fulltime with homeschooling. We had to ask ourselves, is the education she receives at school in the public system actually improving her or only bringing her down. We are here to tell you, the public school system was not right for our child, and because of this, we have determined the best option is to teach them ourselves.

The public school system has greatly modified the way in which our children learn, as you are all aware of common core mathematics and do not even get me started on the use of technology as a means in which to babysit your child and cause headaches and arguments in the home when they want to use YouTube after school. As a father that works in Information Technology and more specifically Cyber Security, I'm astonished at how terrible the school has done to protect the young minds of our children with technology. Albeit, this duty also falls upon us as parents to provide proper guidance and nurturing of the mind, thus while we will be adopting technology into our curriculum, it will be highly modified and geared to a well-balanced learning program. (Not to mention, locked down, as I will be implementing my own Google Workspace for Education, and thus able to control what is seen or not seen.) - More on this later

What about hand-writing in schools? What has happened to the basics of being able to sign your name in cursive? I myself and my wife are big proponents that the educational system is broken when it comes to basic functions and understanding of how the world works. I may be a person of a technological background and it may pay my bills, but I do not believe basic concepts of life skills should be left to pass with the advent of generational innovation.

We both are fortunate enough to work from home, and had some serious heart-to-heart conversations about our budget, stress, and overall need to continue working while we go on this journey together with our children. We hope that by sharing our struggles and successes with you, that lessons learned may be adopted and modified to fit your life style. Keeping in mind that not all choices may work for any one family, and it will always be better to find what works based on your needs and that of your children's needs as well.
